Head to Head: Winter versus Summer
It is traditionally believed that the holidays are the worst time of year to try and lose weight or at the very least stick to a weight loss plan. However, living in a region of the country where cold weather lingers for a large part of the year, there is another time of year that rivals if not supersedes the winter holiday season when it comes to trimming the waistline. That time of year? Early summer.
Let’s take a look at both times of year and do a comparison:
Winter Holidays have family gatherings, parties, the holidays themselves, and of course the fact that two of the three holidays (arguably all three) revolve around food and not the healthy weight loss kind. Early summer on the other hand brings people out of their houses from the long hibernation of winter. Camping, barbecues, vacation trips, and just the warm weather bring about a whole host of new challenges for those looking to look leaner in their bathing suit.
So which one is the most challenging? To be honest they both pose tremendous temptations, and while it is easier to hide the pounds gained from the holidays, I believe both are equally as difficult. The constant influence of others and exposure to unsupportive food choices will always be there as will the opportunities to skip workout sessions (nice weather, family gatherings, etc).
What is the solution? Start now. Don’t ‘wait’ for the best time of year or till Monday to start your efforts. The truth is there is no better time than now to start especially if you are motivated to change and are willing to take the steps to make that change. It’s been proven time and time and time again that New Year’s Resolutions do not work, so waiting till the New Year isn’t going to drastically change your mindset, you’ve got to take the reins and do it yourself and it doesn’t matter what time of year you do it. The obstacles and challenges will always be there. Take the first step and the rest will be easier.
I’ve only got a few more days in Bermuda then I’ll be heading home. I’ll be sure to post lots of pictures and tell you all about it:)

I think it is much easier in the summer to get motivated to exercise and when it is hot you don’t feel to eat as much.. In the winter its harder to get motivated to go out in the cold.. I really don’t like the cold weather. I know I am living in the wrong place to complain about it.

I think I would agree with Rose, summer seems to be easier to get up and just do it! My big thing is the decrease in daylight, or lack thereof in the winter. It’s so much better getting a run in when it’s light out in the morning, and not having it dark when you get out of work! Also, since my thing is kettlebells, I love to work out outside and not have to layer up before I do, and swinging a kettlebell with gloves is a bitch, haha! Only saving grace for winter is if you are a winter sports person. I am a Ski Patroller, so I have to keep up my fitness level and embrace the weather. If folks had sports or activities they like to do in both seasons then maybe the motivation to keep up their level of fitness would be easier regardless of the time of year, and not just give in to seasonal “excuses” like holiday food, barbecues and beer, beach weather, or just plain hibernating!

Summertime I find to be very hard because I am constantly stressed about my appearance in the summer. I am during the winter months as well, but it is easier to hide a few pounds. Summer months are hard with cookouts because the temptation is there to eat things that may not be so healthy (pasta dishes) and to have a few drinks with friends! We have all heard from Ben just how bad the alcohol is for us! Winter months you can really get great workouts if you snowshoe, ski, etc and you usually have less projects that keep you from exercising.
