Not Another Goal Article…!

Why have you struggled for so long?  Why is it so difficult to achieve success?  What is it that makes successful people achieve great things?  Do they possess a power or skill that many of us do not?  No, that’s not the case.  In fact, the one thing all successful people do and do well is set goals.

Now before you say, ‘oh not another article about setting goals, how boring’, I want you to think about one thing you want more than anything to accomplish in your lifetime.  You can certainly have more than one but for the case of this sample, just choose one.  First you have to ask yourself if you truly believe you can achieve it.  If the answer is no, then I suggest choosing something else because you will never achieve something you don’t think you can.  But if the answer is yes, then you are on the right track and have the positive mindset to start setting your roadmap.

In order to set goals you can achieve (which are those which you can visualize), you must have a deadline which you wish to achieve this goal.  Set your deadline and use as much description as possible in setting this deadline or endpoint goal.  The more descriptive you are, the more real it becomes.  The next step is where most people tend to overlook.  Set benchmark goals starting with the deadline, and work backward.  For example, if your goal is to be accomplished in 6 months, start with the end goal, then set a goal by the 5 month mark, the 4 month mark, 3 month mark, 2 month mark, 1 month mark, and even 4 week, up to 1 week from today.  What this does is not only sets benchmarks, but also sets mini goals along the way to allow you to monitor your progress and stay in tune to making daily progress with a little added accountability to reach the benchmark goals you set for yourself.

With each benchmark goal, you must then list the action steps in checklist form which you must accomplish/practice to achieve the benchmark goal.  These checklists are your ‘To-Do’ list in accomplishing your goals.  For each benchmark you need to have a ‘to do’ list and these can also be considered mini-goals along your roadmap.

As you can see there is setting a goal, and then there is setting a plan to achieve your goal.  Many, will set a goal in their heads but never achieve it because they have no clue how to get there; they have no roadmap (I know I’ve done that).  They sadly don’t achieve their goal because they become frustrated and give up.  If you plan and plan extensively, set a roadmap, and put one foot in front of the other, you can achieve anything you put your mind and action to.
